On 5th October 2005, SystmOne Palliative Care was deployed in Northern
Ireland, at Belfast City Hospital (Macmillan Cancer Relief) and The Ulster
Hospital (Palliative Care team), with Marie Curie Belfast soon to follow.
Chris Stones, Palliative Care Support Specialist, said: “This is a
very exciting time for us at TPP. It is the first deployment we have been
involved with outside of Great Britain and I am looking forward to helping
to make their transition to SystmOne go smoothly.”
Palliative Care is the active holistic care of patients with advanced progressive
illness. Each and every day, 739 people in the UK are told they have cancer.
More than one million people in the UK today have had a cancer diagnosis,
and more than one in three will be diagnosed at some time in their life.
In 2002, TPP were approached to develop a system that would connect the various
services offered by the Bradford Palliative Care teams, including Marie Curie
Cancer Care, Sue Ryder Care, Macmillan Cancer Relief and NHS units. Whilst
each service had differing needs, all needed to work closely together as
patients were referred between the services. The project extended the bounds
of the SystmOne architecture into new areas, such as social care and a much
more sophisticated shared records system.
Sue Sanders, a Director at TPP, said: “Unfortunately, we will all at
some time in our lives be touched by the fear and anxiety caused by progressive
illnesses such as Cancer. Hopefully, our system will assist in the best possible
care for these patients and their families at such a stressful time. SystmOne
allows not only clinical care pathways, to be shared with other clinicians,
but also makes available the patients personal wishes to all of the carers
involved in their particular case, which should ensure that these requests
can be upheld.”
