SystmOne and Darzi's Proposals
Much media coverage is being dedicated to the proposals put forward by Lord Darzi to develop a 'Darzi centre' in every PCT, and large polyclinics in London. SHAs are responding by announcing their road map plans. Here, TPP's Clinical Director, Dr John Parry, explains how SystmOne can support these proposals.
The first two SHA action plans have stated intentions as follows:
-
Improved care for specific groups (e.g. child asthmatics) and reduced unnecessary admissions
-
Improved use of Allied Health Professional skills (e.g. pharmacy)
-
Palliative care – reduction in deaths in hospital
-
Fewer journeys for patients
-
Lifestyle advice
-
Emphasis on children's health and improved care for children – experienced GP available Out of Hours for advice
-
Breastfeeding
-
18 Week Wait for community services
Dr Parry says, "The Darzi reports have placed great emphasis on health inequalities, access to primary care and improved working between clinicians. The much publicised polyclinics describe more integrated working between different community-based services, as well as changes to the structure of primary care.
"We have already been contacted by PCT staff to find out how SystmOne can support a polyclinic. Sharing information between services is what SystmOne does, and does well. Capitalising on that benefit to help NHS staff deliver new and innovative services is very exciting."
How SystmOne supports Darzi proposals:
-
By sharing records across care settings or within one large organisation such as a polyclinic or Darzi centre, the record is always available, ensuring continuity of care. Where appropriate, the record can make the journey to a consultant without the patient going with it – reducing patient journeys, unnecessary admissions, investigations and referrals.
-
The wide availability of SystmOne can help specific user groups to support patients. Community-based pharmacists can have access to patient records (subject to patient consent and role-based access controls) and can provide a service to many practices from a single location.
-
Where practices merge into one larger practice, SystmOne can support all the functions of the new unit.
-
Experienced GPs providing support for clinicians treating children can enhance their approach by having access to the child’s full GP record remotely (e.g. at home) and ensure immediate communication of their thoughts/findings by writing into the same record, which is immediately available to other carers.
-
The integration of child health records in SystmOne enhances vaccine uptake and provides a platform for shared children’s records.
-
The shared record will also support breastfeeding campaigns by ensuring that all those involved in care have access to the records of those offering advice.
-
SystmOne provides support for 18 Week Wait pathways in the community.
